ASUU Authorises 20 University Branches to Begin Strike Action Process

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has authorised 20 university branches to begin the process that could lead to industrial action. The union cites the alleged failure of federal and state governments to fully implement its 2025 agreement. The decision was reached at ASUU’s National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026. Affected branches have been directed to issue 14-day ultimatums before declaring strikes if their demands are not resolved. At Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, ASUU has given the Jigawa State Government two weeks to act, warning that a strike may begin on September 15. Sokoto State University’s branch has issued a similar ultimatum, while ASUU at Nnamdi Azikiwe University has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of members’ full August salaries. The developments have raised fresh concerns about possible disruptions to academic activities at public universities.
