Enugu Residents Protest Rising Rents and Excessive Agent Fees
Residents in Enugu have protested rising house rents and what they describe as excessive charges by landlords and property agents. The protesters marched to Independence Layout, near the Enugu State Government House, demanding to meet Governor Peter Mbah and members of the State House of Assembly. They say tenants are being asked to pay fees far beyond the annual rent. One example cited was a self-contained apartment with a ₦400,000 annual rent but additional agency, caution, agreement and management fees that bring the total initial payment to about ₦900,000. The protesters are calling for action against frequent rent increases and unregulated agency charges in the state.
