Shock in Ebonyi: 20-Year-Old Banishes After Killing Mother Over Bathing Dispute

A 20-year-old man was arrested in Ohatekwe Ukawu, Onicha LGA, Ebonyi State after allegedly killing his mother with a machete during a domestic argument. Neighbours raised the alarm over the weekend and local media later reported the tragedy. Community leaders and more than 200 youths quickly formed a search party. They discovered the suspect hiding in a nearby forest and escorted him back to the village. In line with a traditional Igbo custom for serious offences, the young man was publicly paraded and then banished from the community. He confessed that he acted because his mother refused to bathe him and would not rent a shop for his brother’s planned barbing salon. Residents remain deeply shaken by the violence and the swift communal response that followed.
