South Africa Picks Durban for 2036 and 2040 Olympic Games Bid
South Africa has selected Durban as its preferred city to host the 2036 or 2040 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Some events could also be staged in other cities, according to the country’s Olympic committee. Durban’s proposal would centre on the 56,000-capacity Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Johannesburg and Cape Town were also considered before Durban was chosen. The country is among seven nations seeking the 2036 Games. If successful, South Africa would become the first African nation to host the modern Summer Olympics. The International Olympic Committee is expected to select the host city in mid-2029.
