WHO Report: Heart Disease and Stroke Led Global Deaths in 2023

The World Health Organization says ischaemic heart disease and stroke were the leading causes of death worldwide in 2023. Ischaemic heart disease caused about 9.5 million deaths, representing 16 per cent of all global deaths. Stroke caused an estimated 6.8 million deaths, while chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused about 3.6 million. The report found that non-communicable diseases made up eight of the 10 leading causes of death and accounted for 74 per cent of deaths worldwide. Dementia rose sharply, becoming the fifth leading cause of death after deaths from the condition tripled since 2000. Global life expectancy recovered to 73.3 years in 2023, close to its pre-pandemic level. COVID-19 also dropped out of the world’s 10 leading causes of death for the first time since 2020.
