Nasarawa Bans Children Under 18 From Mining Sites

The Nasarawa State Government has barred children under 18 from taking part in mining activities across the state. The Commissioner for Environment, Mining and Natural Resources said the directive is meant to protect children from exploitation, health risks and being denied access to education. The ban covers work as labourers, errand runners and food vendors at mining sites. The government said operators, companies and parents who violate the directive could face arrest and prosecution under child-rights and mining laws. Authorities will work with security agencies, traditional rulers and community leaders to enforce compliance in affected areas, including Wamba, Nasarawa-Eggon and Kokona. The state also plans to formalise artisanal miners into cooperatives to improve regulation and safety.
