IDF Strike Kills IRGC Navy Chief Tangsiri Over Hormuz Closure
An Israeli Defense Forces strike in Bandar Abbas killed IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri, the officer credited with mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz. The attack, confirmed by Israeli sources and reported to a major regional newspaper, occurred at 3 a.m. local time and also claimed several of Tangsiri’s top aides. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the operation, saying Tangsiri had “blood on his hands” and led the closure of the strategic waterway. Defense Minister Israel Katz described the move as key to reopening Hormuz and underscored Israel’s cooperation with the United States on shared security objectives. Since taking command in 2018, Tangsiri oversaw a major buildup of naval missiles, drones, and mines. He directed attacks on commercial shipping, supported allied groups like the Houthis, and threatened US-linked oil facilities before his death. The United States has prioritized degrading Iran’s naval capabilities, reportedly neutralizing some 100 vessels used by the IRGC sea forces since the war began.
