How I Grew Ginger Successfully in a Sack Bag in Port Harcourt
With limited space in Port Harcourt, I decided to try growing ginger in a breathable sack bag. I bought a sprouting piece of ginger from a local market and chose it carefully to reduce the risk of rot after planting. I prepared a rich growing mix with recycled soil, compost and well-fermented chicken manure. After allowing the soil to settle for two days, I planted the ginger at a shallow depth and watered it consistently. Over the next seven to eight months, I added compost and extra soil whenever the rhizomes became exposed. The leaves were also carefully harvested for family use without damaging the plant. When the leaves turned pale, I harvested the ginger and got roughly 10 times the size of the piece I planted. This experience showed me that ginger and other food crops can thrive in sacks, even where garden space is limited.
