Amnesty Urges Wike to Halt Maitama Demolition Over Drainage and Flood Risks
Amnesty International Nigeria has asked FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the Federal Capital Development Authority to suspend planned demolition work at Plot 5334 in Maitama, Abuja, pending an independent review. The organisation says the plot is a public-utility corridor containing underground stormwater and sewage infrastructure built between 2012 and 2014. It warns that disturbing the site could disrupt water flow and raise flood risks for nearby properties. Amnesty also raised concerns about the reported allocation of the land for private development while litigation and mediation before the FCT ADR Committee remain unresolved. It is seeking a technical assessment, disclosure of land and planning records, and a pause on development until public-safety and environmental risks are assessed. FCT authorities' response and independent technical findings were not included in the reports reviewed. The claims about the corridor and its potential impact should therefore be understood as Amnesty's position.
