NSCIA Raises Religious-Bias Concerns Over El-Rufai’s Continued Detention
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has raised concerns that religious interests may be influencing the continued detention and prosecution of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The council said it had initially viewed the matter as a normal judicial process. However, it said recent developments, including allegations by Defence Minister Christopher Musa that El-Rufai contributed to insecurity and divisions in Southern Kaduna, prompted its intervention. El-Rufai has denied the allegations through his family, which demanded that the minister provide evidence or retract the claims within seven days. The NSCIA urged the Federal Government and the judiciary to prevent public institutions from being used for any sectarian agenda, while asking Nigerians to avoid comments that could inflame tensions or prejudice the case.
