Military Pensioners Plan Defence Ministry Protest Over Unpaid Pension Adjustment

Retired military personnel plan to protest at the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday over the non-implementation of pension increases linked to recent salary adjustments for serving officers. A leader of the retirees, Col. Innocent Azubike (retd.), said President Bola Tinubu approved a military pay rise in November 2025 and that pensioners should have received a consequential adjustment. He said the retirees believe the unpaid increase is their constitutional entitlement. Azubike said a further salary increase for serving personnel, expected to take effect in September 2026, also excludes pensioners. The group warns this could create wide pension gaps between officers of the same rank and years of service who retired at different times.
