Tinubu Honors June 12 Heroes with National Awards for Activists, Journalists and Officers
President Bola Tinubu used his Democracy Day address to announce national honours for pro-democracy activists, journalists, civil society advocates and military officers who endured persecution, detention and exile during Nigeria’s struggle for democracy. He paid tribute to figures such as the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti and General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and named dozens of living recipients. The ceremony also recognized “soldier-democrats” for supporting the June 12 mandate. In addition, the president approved renaming the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna after General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. He urged Nigerians to safeguard democratic gains and pledged to publish the full honours list soon.
