Police in Akwa Ibom have arrested two Ekpo masquerade participants over allegations that they extorted and assaulted residents along the Ukana/Abak Highway. The suspects, Ine Isong, 29, and Emmanuel Ekpenyong, 20, were arrested during a police operation at about 6 p.m. on October 26. Police said they recovered masquerade costumes, machetes, spears and arrows. The command alleged that the suspects and other participants intimidated passers-by, demanded money and assaulted some residents, including women. Investigations are ongoing to identify others who may be involved. The Commissioner of Police said cultural practices must remain lawful and cannot be used to threaten residents or disrupt public safety.
