Filmmaker Ola Balogun Directs Donation of Organs and Body to Medical Research

Veteran Nigerian filmmaker Ola Balogun says he wants his viable organs, including his kidneys and eyes, donated to people in need after his death. He also directed that the rest of his body be given to medical institutions for research and the training of future doctors. The 81-year-old made the wishes public while receiving treatment at a medical centre in Lagos after a recent health scare. He said he wrote the document urgently because he was uncertain whether he would recover. Balogun said his decision was inspired by the belief that his physical remains should remain useful to the living. A pioneer of Nigerian cinema, he is known for films and documentaries including "Alpha," "Ija Ominira," "Amadi," "Ajani Ogun" and "Oorun Moru."
