Joke Silva Becomes Eye Bank Ambassador, Urges Nigerians to Donate Corneas — 1 of 3

The Eye Bank for Restoring Sight in Nigeria has unveiled veteran actress Joke Silva as its ambassador and renewed its call for corneal donation. The organisation says donated corneas can restore sight for people living with treatable corneal blindness. At the unveiling in Lagos, the Eye Bank said it has facilitated more than 95 corneal transplants, including for 19 children. However, over 200 people are still awaiting donor corneas. It urged Nigerians who wish to donate to inform their families, as corneas must be harvested soon after death. Medical experts warned against harmful traditional eye treatments, including the use of battery acid, urine and unverified mixtures. They advised parents and communities to seek prompt treatment from qualified eye specialists for injuries, infections and other eye problems. Beneficiaries and donor families shared testimonies of restored sight and encouraged wider public support for corneal donation. The Eye Bank plans to expand donor registration, training, research and partnerships with tertiary hospitals across Nigeria.
