Seven Family Members Abducted and Murdered on KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, Three Arrested
Police in South Africa say seven relatives were kidnapped from their home in Newtown, Newark, on April 21, 2026, and driven to Melmoth where they were killed. A 20-year-old woman and an 83-year-old grandparent were among the victims. Three suspects, including a former employee of the family, were arrested in Hlomendlini and Dendetu. Officers recovered a firearm and 11 stolen cellphones, one still registered to a victim. Investigators say the suspects forced victims to reveal banking details, carried out transactions, then shot three victims and stabbed four. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner praised the swift response and urged employers in remote areas to vet staff carefully. The three accused, aged 21, 26, and 28, will appear in KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on charges of kidnapping, murder, rape, and armed robbery. The victims have been identified and next of kin notified.
