South-East Security Perception Could Be Driving Away Investment
A July 2026 security-perception index placed Enugu at 38.8, below the FCT, Lagos and several other states listed. The concern is not only the score itself, but how repeated insecurity narratives can shape business confidence and investment decisions across the South-East. Investors consider crime reports, local feedback, media coverage and online conversations before committing funds. Reporting kidnappings, attacks and poor governance is necessary, but portraying the entire region as permanently unsafe can obscure the reality that millions of people still live, trade, study and operate businesses there daily. The South-East needs honest accountability alongside a fuller picture of functioning businesses, institutions, entrepreneurs and communities. Diaspora voices can demand better security without amplifying the idea that the region is beyond recovery, because lost confidence may ultimately mean fewer jobs and opportunities for residents.
