Over Half of Edo Child-Abuse Victims Were Allegedly Abused by Their Fathers, Commissioner Says

Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, says more than half of reported child-abuse victims in the state were abused by their fathers. Speaking at a media briefing in Benin City, she said the ministry recorded more than 72 abuse cases involving children aged two to 10 between January and July 2026. She added that some victims and relatives protect alleged abusers, making prosecution difficult. The commissioner cited the case of a 14-year-old girl, now eight months pregnant, who allegedly identified her father as responsible but pleaded that he should not be arrested. The ministry says it is also rehabilitating vulnerable people with severe mental health conditions found on the streets of Benin City and inspecting care facilities before making referrals.
