Should Nigeria Strengthen Capital Punishment to Curb Rising Crime?
Recent violent crimes—from the Owerri killings to widespread banditry and kidnappings—show many criminals believe they will never face real consequences. Delays in court hearings and political wrangling over death warrants leave dangerous offenders free for years. Innocent Nigerians continue to suffer while corruption and violence escalate. Nigeria needs a faster, tougher justice system. For crimes like terrorism, mass murder, ritual killings, violent rape and major graft, death sentences upheld by the highest court should be carried out quickly, without endless delays. A strong deterrent is vital for national security, investor confidence and the safety of every citizen.
