Iran Executes Afghan Man Over Alleged Role in January Protests
Iran has executed 21-year-old Afghan national Ghaem Hosseini after convicting him over the deaths of four police officers during anti-government protests in Isfahan. Iran’s judiciary said he was found guilty of drawing a weapon, causing public fear and disrupting national security. However, Norway-based Iran Human Rights said he was accused only of kicking one officer and that authorities had not provided evidence linking his actions to any death. Hosseini is the fifth person executed in the case and the second Afghan national hanged over the January protests. The rights group says at least 30 protesters have been executed since March 19, raising fresh concerns about Iran’s use of the death penalty against protesters and political detainees.
