Niger State Police Rescue Four Children, Arrest Two Women Over Trafficking and Rituals

Niger State Police Rescue Four Children, Arrest Two Women Over Trafficking and Rituals — 1 of 5
1 / 5

The Niger State Police Command says it has rescued four children from a network posing as adoption and orphanage operators. Two women, aged 68 and 62, were arrested in Suleja on June 3 after officers raided a residence behind the old NEPA area. One of the children was later found at the second suspect’s home on Church Road. The detainees claimed they were licensed adoption caregivers and herbal medical practitioners, admitting they resumed an orphanage home last November. During the operation, police discovered a shrine stocked with animal skulls, feathers and multi-coloured clothing. The children have been placed with a child rights agency while investigations continue at the command headquarters in Minna.

Police rescue operations sound promising, but I wonder what oversight exists to ensure those orphanage fronts truly shut down permanently.

Local NGOs should partner with the police to track suspicious adoption schemes and provide safe reporting channels for concerned citizens.
