Hamzat: Lagos Will Track Officials Who Approve Buildings on Flood-Prone Land
Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat says officials who approve developments on flood-prone land or drainage routes should be identified and held accountable. He said the state is strengthening its Geographic Information System to make planning approvals traceable and show which officials handled them. Hamzat warned that structures blocking drainage channels can worsen flooding in nearby homes, streets and businesses. He also cited drainage clearing, dredging and improved monitoring as part of Lagos’ wider flood-management efforts. The impact of the proposal will depend on accurate records, investigations and consistent enforcement of planning rules.
