South-East States Lead Nigeria in Key Maternal Healthcare Indicators
I believe the South-East’s maternal healthcare performance deserves closer national attention. Recent survey data show that Enugu recorded 99.3% skilled antenatal-care coverage, while Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo also ranked highly. On health-facility deliveries, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu occupied the top five positions in the 2021 national survey. These figures point to more women receiving skilled support during pregnancy and childbirth. The results reflect the role of private hospitals, maternity centres, community efforts, education, religious institutions and healthcare professionals across the region. They do not erase existing gaps in infrastructure, jobs, healthcare access and governance. My point is that Nigeria should study development models that work. The South-East’s experience in enterprise, community mobilisation and maternal health offers lessons worth sustaining and replicating. The figures are drawn from national demographic and health surveys.
