Kano Investigates Reports of Over 50 Child Deaths Linked to Suspected Diphtheria

The Kano State Centre for Disease Control has launched an investigation into reports that more than 50 children died from suspected diphtheria in Rano Local Government Area. Officials said Kano has recorded 32 confirmed cases this year, including 25 in August. An active case search conducted after four cases were reported identified 10 additional cases and two deaths. The agency said the gap between the official case count and the reported deaths may be linked to late reporting and treatment outside formal health facilities. It is conducting verbal autopsies with affected families to establish the causes of death. Kano has recorded more than 31,000 confirmed diphtheria cases since the outbreak began in 2022. Health officials urged parents to seek prompt medical care for children with symptoms and ensure they receive routine vaccination.
