Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, 24, was sentenced to life with a minimum of 21 years and six months for the murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel. The incident began in June 2024 in Leicester when Ahanonu lost control of his car, crashed near a bus stop and then launched a random, violent attack on Patel as she walked home. Witnesses saw him punch, kick and stamp on her. Police found cannabis in his system and dealer bags in the vehicle. During a post-arrest interview, he appeared in disbelief, laughed at the footage and claimed he could not remember the attack. Patel suffered a fractured skull and brain injury and died in hospital two days later. Her family described her as a kind, gentle and vibrant soul.
