Amaechi Defends Onaiyekan, Alleges Presidency Is Intimidating Christian Critics
Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi has defended Cardinal John Onaiyekan over his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Speaking on Channels Television on August 4, Amaechi rejected claims that the cardinal’s comments were politically motivated. He said Onaiyekan was speaking about hardship, poverty and corruption, not in support of any party or candidate. Amaechi alleged that the Presidency would not have responded in the same way if the remarks had come from the Sultan of Sokoto. He argued that religious leaders have a duty to speak when Nigerians are suffering and accused the government of trying to intimidate critics.
