Why Your Teeth May Feel Loose or Gapped After Scaling
It is common to notice new gaps, sensitivity or a different feeling in your teeth after scaling. This does not necessarily mean the cleaning damaged your teeth. In many cases, hardened tartar had been filling spaces between the teeth or masking existing gum disease. Tartar is hardened plaque that cannot be removed by ordinary brushing. It can collect around and beneath the gums, causing inflammation and gradually damaging the bone and tissues that support the teeth. Removing it may reveal spaces or tooth movement that were already present. Scaling removes plaque and tartar so the teeth and gums can be properly assessed and kept clean. It cannot restore bone already lost to advanced gum disease. If a tooth remains loose, painful or unusually sensitive after treatment, see a dentist for an assessment rather than allowing tartar to build up again.
