Understanding Isese: A Personal View of Yoruba Spirituality

I understand Isese as the inherited practices, values and spiritual traditions that shape who we are. I once used the term Aborisa, but I now see it as narrower because it refers specifically to venerating the oriṣa. In my view, Isese can include this but goes beyond it. I see Isese as something natural rather than something a person is converted into. I believe it does not require formal learning, should not diminish other people, and should benefit the individual or guide them towards a better life. What qualifies as Isese may therefore differ from one person to another. An Ifa verse describes Isese as central both in heaven and on earth. It presents Olodumare, one’s parents, one’s body and the duties of life as parts of Isese. For me, Isese is the essential practice and responsibility that a person cannot avoid.
