Phyna vs Nkechi Blessing: Why Celebrity Boxing Has Found an Audience in Nigeria
The Phyna and Nkechi Blessing bout delivered the entertainment many people expected from the celebrity boxing event. Phyna’s movement, jab and discipline helped her manage Nkechi’s pressure, while Nkechi kept pushing forward despite appearing exhausted late in the fight. The result drew discussion online, especially over the stoppage, which some viewers felt looked more like a push than a clear knockout. Still, both fighters showed resilience, and their embrace afterwards reflected the sporting spirit of the event. The Carter Efe and Speed Darlington contest was less convincing. Concerns about illegal punches, fitness and ring discipline overshadowed the fight. Even so, the crowd reaction suggests celebrity boxing can continue to attract a strong Nigerian audience if future events maintain clear rules and competitive matchups.
