FG Launches MAMI Incentives to Improve Maternal and Newborn Care

The Federal Government has launched the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMI) to encourage early antenatal registration, delivery in health facilities and postnatal follow-up. The programme targets 172 LGAs in 33 states, areas said to account for about 55 per cent of maternal deaths in Nigeria. It aims to cut maternal deaths by 30 per cent and newborn deaths by 20 per cent in the targeted areas by 2028. Health authorities said about 2.9 million pregnant women are expected to benefit from free and timely care. More than 250 facilities in Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Ogun states are already implementing the initiative, with over 32,000 women and 1,700 newborns supported through emergency care. The government said the intervention will also strengthen primary healthcare facilities, skilled staffing, essential supplies and access to emergency obstetric services.
