Awka Archbishop Urges Prayer as Diocese Rejects Primate’s Leave Directive
Archbishop Alexander Ibezim urged worshippers at St. Faith Cathedral, Awka, to remain united in prayer and faith amid the leadership dispute in the Diocese of Awka. He said the challenge facing the church should not be met with violence or physical confrontation. The call came days after the Primate of the Church of Nigeria directed Ibezim to begin six months’ compulsory leave pending an investigation. The directive also named Bishop Samuel Ezeofor of Aguata Diocese as supervising bishop for Awka Diocese during the period. The Awka Diocesan Board has rejected both decisions. It reaffirmed support for Ibezim, instructed diocesan organs to reject directives from Ezeofor, and warned that it could withdraw from the Church of Nigeria if it considers the intervention in the diocese to continue.
