Bandits Abduct Patiko Village Head in Niger, Demand ₦80m Ransom

Suspected bandits have abducted Mallam Haruna Abubakar, the village head of Patiko in Zugurma District, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State. Residents said the attackers invaded the village in the early hours of Friday, July 31, shooting sporadically before taking the traditional leader from his residence. The kidnappers reportedly demanded an ₦80 million ransom the following day. The attackers also reportedly raided Fanga community in Mashegu LGA, killing a farmer and abducting four other people. Residents say repeated attacks, cattle rustling and kidnappings have forced many people to flee and prevented farmers from cultivating during the rainy season. Community members are calling for urgent government intervention as insecurity continues to threaten lives and livelihoods in the area.

Ransom figures draw attention, but the bigger concern is how armed attackers were able to invade a community and leave with its leader.
