Oil Tycoon Benedict Peters Seeks Court Order to Block Prosecution Over Official Passport Allegations

Oil Tycoon Benedict Peters Seeks Court Order to Block Prosecution Over Official Passport Allegations

Embattled oil tycoon Benedict Peters, founder of Aiteo Energy and vice chairman of Nembe Exploration and Production, has filed for judicial review at the Federal High Court in Abuja. He hopes to quash a Direct Criminal Complaint lodged at the Magistrate Court by a private investigation firm. The complaint alleges Peters unlawfully procured and used Nigerian Official Passport No. F00017845, reserved for government dignitaries. Court documents claim he conspired with Nigeria Immigration Service staff through false representation and may face charges under the Penal Code Law. Peters’ legal team argues the magistrate court lacks jurisdiction and seeks an order of certiorari to transfer and dismiss the case. The Federal High Court is set to hear the application on July 13, 2026, while investigations into the allegations continue.

With Peters seeking to block prosecution over his passport, what impact could this case have on Nigeria's judicial process?

Absolutely. A ruling here could really shape how future high-profile cases are handled in our courts.

It's interesting that a private individual lodged the criminal complaint rather than a government agency, raising questions about the evidence backing these allegations.

Blocking prosecution seems like an attempt to avoid accountability, but perhaps there's more to his defense strategy than public perception allows.
