Power Minister Says Improved Supply Has Nigerians Joking That Their Freezers Are Working Overtime

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe says some electricity consumers have reported longer daily supply, with areas that previously had little or no power now receiving up to 18 hours of electricity. He said some residents jokingly asked him to slow down because their freezers were running continuously. Tegbe spoke at the commissioning of a 3MW solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja. The project includes a 3.3MW solar array, battery storage, 6,078 solar panels and 388 streetlights. It is expected to support lecture halls, laboratories, ICT facilities and other essential services for more than 58,000 students. The minister said the government is replacing ageing electricity infrastructure but warned that vandalism remains a major threat. He disclosed that vandals recently brought down three transmission towers supplying Kebbi State and extending to Niger Republic, prompting closer collaboration among security agencies to protect power assets.
