Lakurwa Terrorists Ambush Troops, Kill Senior Officer Weeks Before Wedding in Sokoto
Suspected Lakurawa terrorists ambushed soldiers on May 16 near Runji village in Illela LGA, Sokoto State. They killed seven soldiers and a civilian guide. Among the fallen is Lieutenant Abdullahi Ismail Chafe, who was due to marry on June 13, 2026. The troops were returning from an operation against a Lakurawa hideout when one vehicle developed a fault about 10km from Illela town. As soldiers stopped to make repairs, at least 30 armed fighters on motorcycles opened fire, triggering a fierce gun battle. Reports vary on the exact death toll, but security sources confirm six soldiers died at the scene and another body was found later. Reinforcements have been deployed and intelligence-led operations are ongoing to track down and neutralise those responsible. The military has asked for privacy as families of the fallen heroes are notified.
