Pat Utomi Questions Election Spending as Nigerians Struggle With Rising Living Costs
Political economist Pat Utomi has criticised the gap between the hardship faced by many Nigerians and the millions reportedly spent by politicians during party primaries. He said many workers earn below ₦100,000 monthly, while some university professors earn less than ₦500,000. According to him, high electricity costs and fuel prices can consume a large share of those salaries. Utomi questioned how politicians can spend heavily to secure party tickets while many citizens struggle to afford food, transport and other basic needs. He argued that the contrast raises serious concerns about the health of Nigeria’s democracy.
