Polling Unit Results Can Be Announced, but Only INEC Can Declare Winners
Election results may be announced after they are counted and compiled at each polling unit. However, only INEC has the legal authority to declare the final winner of an election. The proposal is for citizens and observers to collate publicly announced polling-unit results in spreadsheets, from ward level to local government and state level. Supporters believe this could improve transparency and allow the public to compare independently compiled results with official declarations. For the 2027 elections, the focus should be on lawful result monitoring, accurate documentation and peaceful participation.
