Enugu Electricity Worker Dies After Electrocution During Substation Maintenance
An operations employee of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited has died after suffering an electric shock while carrying out maintenance at a 50kVA/11kV pole-mounted distribution substation in Eke, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. The incident occurred at about 1pm on Thursday, August 13. The worker, Samson Okechi, was a team lead attached to the company’s 9th Mile District. He was taken to Our Saviour Hospital in Ngwo, where he was pronounced dead. The case was reported at Ngwo Police Station for documentation and other statutory procedures. The company said Okechi had obtained a Station Guarantee for the Okwe 11kV feeder before the work began and that the feeder was opened and tagged. It dismissed social-media claims that he was murdered or that sabotage was involved. A comprehensive, evidence-based investigation has been launched to establish the immediate and root causes of the accident, identify any safety gaps and strengthen operational controls.
