George Weah Urges NBA to Defend Democracy and Hold Leaders Accountable

Former Liberian President George Weah says elections alone cannot sustain democracy. He urged Nigerian lawyers to defend strong institutions, judicial independence and the rule of law. Speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Weah warned that elected leaders can become authoritarian when they weaken the courts, legislature and other democratic safeguards. “A tyrant with a certificate of return is still a tyrant,” he said. Weah also recalled conceding Liberia’s 2023 presidential election to preserve peace, saying public office is temporary service rather than a prize to be held at all costs. Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and NBA President Afam Osigwe similarly stressed the need for an independent judiciary and accountable governance.
