National Assembly Employs Over 14,000 Workers, Clerk Calls It World’s Busiest Parliament

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, says the federal parliament has more than 14,000 workers, excluding 469 lawmakers and their daily visitors. Speaking at a capacity-building programme for legislative aides, Ogunlana said the large workforce and high volume of activity make the National Assembly particularly demanding to manage. He also said the Senate and House of Representatives have passed a combined 3,500 bills in the last three years. He renewed calls for a special salary structure for legislative aides. Ogunlana said their temporary, non-pensionable appointments require reforms to improve welfare and strengthen support for lawmakers.
