Analyst Warns Against Excluding South-East From Nigeria’s 2027 Presidency
Nigeria is approaching another major test of equity, inclusion and national unity. I believe continued exclusion of the South-East from the presidency could deepen resentment and worsen separatist agitation in the region. The wounds of the 1967–1970 civil war and decades of perceived marginalisation remain sensitive issues for many Igbo Nigerians. While the South-West, North and South-South have produced presidents since 1999, the South-East has yet to do so through a democratic election. I argue that zoning should be respected if it is to remain a credible tool for balancing Nigeria’s diverse interests. Many young Nigerians supported Peter Obi in 2023, showing that an Igbo candidate can attract support beyond the South-East. Nigeria needs dialogue, fairness and credible institutions to prevent political grievances from becoming wider security threats. Giving every region a genuine sense of belonging is essential to preserving peace and national cohesion.
