AAUA Strike: Ondo’s Infrastructure Drive Must Not Leave Education Behind
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko remains closed despite the Ondo State Government’s N1.1 billion intervention fund and a proposed 60% increase in monthly subventions to state-owned tertiary institutions. The AAUA branch of ASUU began an indefinite strike on August 11, 2026, citing unpaid salary arrears and unresolved agreements. The union says announcements alone cannot end the strike. It is demanding implementation of the agreements, payment of arrears dating back to January, and direct negotiations with the state government. Until these commitments are backed by clear timelines and action, students and staff remain uncertain about when academic activities will resume. The closure is affecting more than lecturers and students. Businesses, landlords, food vendors and transport operators in Akungba-Akoko are losing income, while students face delayed graduation, industrial training and NYSC mobilisation. Ondo State should pursue road construction and other projects, but it must also treat the recovery of AAUA as an urgent investment in human development. A sincere round-table meeting between the government and ASUU is needed to reach a binding agreement, clear outstanding obligations and reopen the university.
