Ekiti Governorship Election Marred by Violence, Vote Buying and Intimidation
Saturday’s governorship poll in Ekiti State was tainted by violence, vote buying and intimidation across 2,445 polling units. About 1.03 million PVC holders were eligible to vote, but turnout varied widely. The incumbent APC governor won with 319,224 votes, ahead of PDP’s Dr Wole Oluyede on 40,543 and ADC’s Ambassador Dare Bejide on 12,872. Observers and civil society groups reported clashes at Ilawe polling unit where security operatives allegedly assaulted voters and the ADC candidate. There were organised vote-buying operations offering between ₦5,000 and ₦20,000, uncollected PVCs distributed to outsiders and alleged pre-thumb-printed ballots. Former Governor Isaac Fayose condemned the exercise as a “coup” that intimidated and disenfranchised citizens, demanding accountability from the electoral commission.
