How to Write an Honest AI Disclosure Statement for Your Assignment
Two students may use AI, but their declarations can create very different impressions. “AI was used in some parts of this work” is vague. A clearer statement explains the tool used, what it helped with, what it did not do, and confirms that the research, analysis and final writing are the student’s own. An AI disclosure is not a confession. It is like a reference list: a short record of how you worked. Keep it simple. State the AI tool, the task it supported, the limits of that support, and your ownership of the final work. Do not list every prompt you typed, but do not hide significant AI use either. Check your assessment brief or module handbook for your department’s policy. If the rules are unclear, ask your lecturer whether AI use should be declared and whether there is a preferred format. A truthful, specific declaration can show academic care. A false declaration can create a much bigger problem if your work is later questioned.
