Man Locks Himself in Metal Cage to Quit 26-Year Smoking Habit
In 2013, 42-year-old İbrahim Yücel from Turkey took an extreme step to overcome a two-pack-a-day habit he’d maintained for 26 years. After losing his father to lung cancer, he designed a metal cage to lock around his head. Each morning, his wife and daughter secured the lock and kept the keys to cut off easy access to cigarettes. The cage allowed only enough room for breathing, drinking water, and eating small portions of food through a straw. Unable to reach his cigarettes, Yücel finally broke free from his addiction. His self-imposed confinement served as a stark reminder of the dangers of smoking and the lengths people will go to reclaim their health. Yücel’s photograph spread across global media, sparking debates about willpower and unconventional methods of quitting smoking. With over one-third of Turkey’s population still smoking, his story became both a personal triumph and a symbol of the national struggle against tobacco.
