Lagos Declares Waste Emergency, Orders 160 Compactor Trucks
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared a “small state of emergency” on waste management after inspecting the Olusosun dumpsite. He said mounting refuse, indiscriminate dumping and slow collection across the city require urgent action. The state plans to expand Olusosun’s receiving capacity and activate additional disposal sites at Solu 3 in Alimosho, Iwulepe in Ikorodu, Oke Osho in Epe and Erikitte in Badagry. The goal is to reduce the long delays waste trucks face at disposal facilities. Sanwo-Olu said Lagos has ordered 160 new compactor trucks and will procure landfill compactors. The government is also developing transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities as part of a longer-term waste sorting and recycling plan. He urged residents to pay private waste collectors for services received, while saying operators that lack the capacity to perform may be removed after a review.
