Morocco Welcomes UN Mission’s Likely Exit From Western Sahara After Security Council Deadlock
Morocco has welcomed the UN Security Council’s failure to renew the mandate of its Western Sahara peacekeeping mission, MINURSO. The Moroccan Royal Office said the development could bring an end to the mission’s 35-year presence in the disputed territory. Russia vetoed a US-backed proposal for a one-year extension that referenced Morocco’s autonomy plan as a basis for negotiations. A separate Russian proposal for a simple extension also failed to secure enough votes. Unless the Security Council agrees on a last-minute extension, MINURSO’s mandate will expire on October 31, 2026. The mission was created in 1991 to monitor a ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario Front and support a planned referendum that has never taken place.
