What a 24-Hour Telecom Blackout Could Cost Nigeria’s Digital Economy
Nigeria’s payment system now moves about ₦2.93 trillion through digital channels each day. From bank transfers and USSD to POS payments and online orders, everyday commerce depends on telecom networks staying online. Yet the infrastructure remains fragile. Industry data points to thousands of fibre cuts, repeated major outages and power failures at telecom sites. Road construction, vandalism and unreliable electricity force operators to spend heavily repairing networks instead of only expanding them. A full-day network outage could halt POS transactions, mobile banking, logistics, online work and digital business operations. Cash may not provide a reliable fallback because it is unevenly available, while most payment platforms need connectivity to work. The central issue is no longer just call quality. Telecoms has become critical national infrastructure for payments, healthcare, education, transport and financial inclusion. Nigeria needs stronger protection for fibre networks, better construction coordination, reliable power and tougher action against vandalism.
