Dozens Dead as Heavy Rains Trigger Widespread Floods in West Africa

Dozens Dead as Heavy Rains Trigger Widespread Floods in West Africa

Heavy rainfall has caused deadly floods along the Gulf of Guinea, affecting Ivory Coast, Ghana and Benin. Authorities report at least 59 deaths in Ivory Coast since May and 12 in Ghana this week. Floodwaters have inundated large parts of Accra and surrounding areas, and significant flooding has also been recorded in Benin. Further downpours are expected in the coming days. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns that around 7.5 million people are at risk. The coastal rainy season typically runs from April to August and again from October to November.

How have local communities in Ghana and Ivory Coast coped with these floods before? Any suggestions to prepare better next time?

Absolutely! Folks often rely on local know-how and quick warnings. We should build on those strengths.

I'm not convinced official death counts capture losses in remote coastal areas where warnings rarely reach in time.

Communities could set up a network of designated flood shelters and conduct regular drills before the next rainy season.
