Uba Sani Recalls How Gani Fawehinmi Helped Open Nigeria’s Political Space
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani says the late human rights lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, played a major role in widening Nigeria’s democratic space. Speaking at the presentation of a book on their mentor-mentee relationship in Kaduna, Sani recalled Fawehinmi’s legal challenge against electoral registration conditions imposed on political associations by INEC. He said Fawehinmi and former Kaduna governor Balarabe Musa won at the Court of Appeal in 2002 and at the Supreme Court in January 2003. According to Sani, the rulings helped create room for more political parties and strengthened citizens’ freedom of association. Sani urged Nigerians to remember the activists and pro-democracy figures whose struggles helped secure the political freedoms enjoyed today.
